Last month Supreme Commander was at last released but since then numerous questions have arisen and we thought why not try to find some answers to some of those questions? So we went straight to Chris Taylor the Lead Designer on Supreme Commander to get some answers:
Q. So far the response to Supreme Commander has been extremely positive, especially shown by the Average Review Score which is currently 88%. Have the reviews lived up to your expectations, did they exceed your expectations or are they perhaps lower than you were aiming for?
Review scores are a tricky thing, because it’s something that’s outside of my control and they are not directly connected to what the customer actually thinks. For me, ultimately, what I care about most, is what someone thinks who bought the game and took it home and played it.
Q. Probably the largest complaint about Supreme Commander is that matches do tend to take a long time to complete, are you looking at any ways to shorten the average amount of time required to complete a match?
We’ve had a lot of requests, all across the board, and we are working hard to deliver in a lot of different areas. We have a new update coming out, and then we’ll look at another list of cool things to improve and add to the matchmaking system. Shortening the match time could easily migrate to the top of the list.
Q. One of the biggest things fans are expecting is some sort of a Map Editor, is there any word on when the map editor will be available? Are there any other official tools we can expect as well?
We are going to include the Editor in the next update, which is currently scheduled for Mid April. We’ll also provide a lot of information through the knowledge base that is accessible through GPGnet. Modders will also be able to get more advanced info, on things like file formats, etc, through the usual gang of GPG engineers that frequently visit the forums and GPGnet chatrooms.
Q. Thus far numerous fan created mods have been released, has Gas Powered Games been watching those mods at all to see what fans are putting together? Also have you guys thought of or have you already been working on any Official Modding tutorials?
It’s been tough to put together comprehensive tutorials, but we are working hard to make information available. And in a short space of time there has been some amazing mods done, with very little support, and we are all very impressed and are itching to get more tools and info released to help the mod effort.
Q. There is a minor group of people out there complaining that Supreme Commander doesn’t run very well on their computers even though they meet and/or exceed the minimum specifications. Can you comment on this at all? Perhaps talk about what you’ve been doing to address these concerns? Or are most of the problems people are experiencing because of “software conflicts”?
We are working hard to optimize the game, and this should really help in a lot of cases, but we have also seen some cases where a driver upgrade has really helped as well. It’s one of those things where you have to come at the problem from all angles, and it’s definitely something we are taking seriously.
Q. It’s been announced that Supreme Commander will eventually support DX10, how much longer will people have to wait before they can take SupCom to the next level?
At this point I can’t say for sure, it’s just a whole lot more work than anyone anticipated.
Q. Currently you’ve released a couple patches for Supreme Commander, they’ve been relatively minor patches for the most part, what kinds of major changes have you guys been working on that fans can expect in future patches?
The updates may have seemed minor, but underneath we made important fixes for stability and hardware compatibility… and most recently, a fix for the blue screen crash. We also included the Mini UI, which many had been asking for. We’ll continue to address stability and performance, while adding some cool tweaks and features, most of which will hopefully just continue to polish the overall experience.
Q. Back in the Total Annihilation era new official units were released for it, can we expect anything similar with Supreme Commander? If you are working on any news units could you comment on what any of them are?
We are indeed working on some new units to release, but we haven’t announced any official dates, and are not quite ready to release the details of what those units are. It’s a surprise! J
Q. Okay, everyone and his dog knows Supreme Commander will be getting an expansion. Is there anything at all you can reveal to the public yet? We know you want to talk about it J.
An expansion is coming? heh heh… man, does everyone’s dog really know that?
Q. Finally is there anything else you’d like add?
Not really, other than I hope everyone knows, if they don’t already, how dedicated we are to the game, and how much we appreciate all the support we have received, past, present and future… it really means a lot to us!!
几点可以注意一下:
4月中会出下一个补丁,这个补丁会比较大,且包括地图编辑器。
将会有新的官方单位出现。
