Things every newbie should know

Things every newbie should know.
This is a list of basic things that every newbie should know.
First: when you are starting out, you should not play people of your skill; try
to play experts. This will improve your skills faster than you ever could have
imagined.
Second: don’t stick to just one map. Learn to play lots of maps. This will also
improve your skills.
Now, a few things. Don’t try to porc until you are good. Porcing only works with
good players.
Don’t disrespect experts or you will hurt for it later, when you are good. Trust
me on that one. If an experts tries to give you tips, LISTEN to them. SWALLOW
your pride.
Now here is a list of units that will never, ever be worth building ever, not
once:
Spy kbots
zeus kbots
Zipper kbots
warrior kbots
cans
sumos
lugers
moho mines
mines, period
vulcans
cloakable fusions
krogoths
doomsday machines
leviathan
hulks
air repair pads
If I think of any more, I will post them.
Units that will rarely be used:
eagle scout planes
radar kbots
thuds
hammers
dominators
merls
mavericks
llt’s
annihilators(mobile also)
decoy commanders
seaplanes
uw fusions
adv torp launchers
warlord
mellenium
conquerers
nukes
anti nukes
flakkers
If anyone sees one or two i didnt post, please tell me.
Expand. Always expand. Keep the pressure on people.
Never ban units, ever. Don’t ban emg, bb, nukes, air. Don’t play gd2 gw. Don’t
play gw.
LOSING IS FUN. WHEN YOU LOSE, YOU LEARN.
Don’t try to learn from demos alone. Learn only starts from demos, and do not
copy from people.
LEARN TO ADAPT.
If I left something out, tell me.

I SERIOUSLY disagree with some of the stuff you’ve advised against building.
Mavericks are, I would have to say, the greatest unit that ARM can build. 10
Mavericks can cut a swath right through an enemy base. Nothing except
rediculously heavy base defences can stop these guys. On a map where there are
few obstacles - ie gasplant plains - If you send a scout over their base and
find their commander - 10-20 Mavericks depending on their defences could easily
break through and enter the heart of the enemies stronghold - taking out the
commander with ease.
Did I mention mavericks are the greatest?

I think what he meant in the 2nd list, was that those units are not built at all
often.
Mavericks, Warlords, Thuds, Hammers, Adv torp launchers, Conquerers, Seaplanes
and Nukes all have their uses, but you just don’t see them often, and are either
built as a support unit, in lesser numbers (e.g Thuds/Mavs), or when you have to
spend large amounts of metal fast, (e.g Warlords/Conqs/ adv torp launchers).
That said i think that Annihilators and Penetrators are totally useless and
should never be built…O_o
Cans have their uses to, now and again.
Oh yeah i forgot, although Warlords are highly effective in some situations,
Milleniums are just plain not worth it. If you’re Arm, and want to spend more
metal on ships, just build Conquerers.

Sumos and Cans not worth building? Sorry Popo but i disagree there, i have won a

Bigbug, you are wrong. On a large map like comet catcher, mavs are practically
useless in the context that you spent two thousand metal on the lab, they take
ages to build, then you spend a further four thousand metal on the mavs, = 6000
plus build time. They will do less damage than massive sams.
The only place where mavs will be useful is on places like jp and sh t like that
where there are tight situations and massive long range units aren’t built;
there are a few more places but i wont list them atm.
And that’s what I am talking about-if an expert gives you advice…listen to
us…we know what we are talking about so.
and beeky, melleniums well…occasionally, if you are excessing severely and
have an adv shipyard running but not enough shipyards to pull it down. VERY
seldom. Warlords are the same, they are four thousand metal that just aint worth
it unless u are excessing.
oh and another thing about mavs…if u have mavs on gpp…i worry for the species

EDIT OH MY GOD HE SAID SUMOS ARE WORTH BUILDING ROFL
sumos are HUGELY expensive, they build fast and drain ur econemy, they walk slow
enough to be killed by ANYTHING, they cant maneuver around CRAP, they fire too
slow to kill all that much by themselves, they are short range, THEY ARE CRAP!
ROFL I CANT BELIEVE HE SAID SUMOS ARE GOOD UNITS

Cruisers build far faster than battleships, so if you really want to spend metal

The Warlord as compared to the Millenium can actually prove effective sometimes,
though you usually build it to show off. Unlike if you built a Millenium you’d

moho extractors are worth it on metal maps. Saves your fusion output and unit
count for other things.
cans do decently on maps with tight terrain and heavy wreckage, where it has
more cover. The high damage/shot means it can take on most land units that
maneuver into range. Its smaller footprint compared to the Sumo means it can
actually move in the wreckage fields.

Posted by Warchicken on 09-08-2002 06:56 AM:
Surely you jest, iracandus. Moho mines are NEVER, EVER WORTH IT. See, on metal
maps, you put four or five cons on mexxes, and by 10 mins you have well over 100
metal.
Let’s look at this.
mm= 1500 metal. On mh, 18.5 metal per sec I believe.
mexx= 50 metal. 2.3 per.
To build 1500 metal worth of mexx you would built 30 of them. 30 x 2.3 = SIXTY
NINE METAL.
So for the same amount of metal your get over three times the production, and in
less time.
And if you want to use the argument ‘You have plenty of metal on metal maps’,
then why not say 'well, if you have so DAMN much metal what the hell do you need
to build mexx with five cons AND moho mines?
Also, building mexxes gives you a steady increase, with almost instant
payoff-moho mines take longer to pay off, and you may stall badly while building
them-not so with mexx.
The space argument. For metal heck, sure, you might need space, but only if you
build OH HMMM A FEW HUNDRED MEXXES…you have plenty of space, in other words.
The battle will be over by then anyway.
The unit space argument. Don’t play metal maps with fewer than a 1500 unit
limit. end argument.
Also, mass mexxes are harder to take down. One moho dies and you lose a huge
amount of production-lose a ----eload of mexx and you can lose as many as 10 and
lose 23 metal but still lose only 500 metal…as opposed to 1500.
GG.

No I don’t jest.
Your argument is flawed on one simple yet critical point. There has yet to be a
Galactic War with 1500 unit limit as standard. The standard in most games
(Galactic War or not) is 500. Plan your strats around that and you’ll see the
advantage. Don’t assume you always have 1500 to play with else you will be in
trouble.
You can make the argument for solars: “Why build fusions when you can build 50
solars?” The greatest advantage of mohos and fusions on metal maps are
ultimately unit count. Normal mexes never stop getting built, but ultimately
their contribution becomes less and less as the unit count limit is aproached.
A person who stalls on metal while building mohos on a metal map is in trouble
anyway. You don’t build a moho unless you have the metal to finish it quickly.
If a person gets to the stage where he starts needing mohos to free up unit
count, then he should damn well have enough metal to finish a few mohos.

Posted by GoblinzKing on 09-08-2002 08:18 AM:
Mexxes
On Mh, you can argue about plenny of mexxes vs a few mohos until the sumos come
home, but what about on regular, non-metal, few metal deposit maps? Then you
have to spread out your defences in a very serious way if you make a billion
mexxes and plan to keep them. And good luck finding the deposits unless you plan
to build just anywhere, metal deposit or no.
Mohos, however, may cost more but are easier to defend and take more shots to
kill. A mexx can be killed by a few peewees or even AKs in a few shots. A moho
in trouble, you have time to call the cavalry.
Especially on Arm city maps, with just parks for metal.
Besides, mohos look better than little mexxes .

Is it me, or does the Shooter seem a lot like a gangster, with a briefcase that

Basing strats around unit limits is critical. A 1500 unit limit strat does not
work for 20 unit limit, 100 unit limit, or 250. Without unit limit
considerations there is little reason to build fusions or for that matter MMM,

Annihilater2k2, you know why you lose?
it’s cause:

  • you don’t realy expand.
  • when you do you waste 2 much metal defending a few MT or just empty ground.
  • You tend to get more MT then units so you can’t move them around to defend or
    reinforce the place beeing attacked.
And worst, you attack and if you see the other guy defending the place you
attacked, that’s where you keep pumping units in.
What you shoud do it be happy that your enemy got 5 HLT in the same place and go
around it and kill stuff in the back.
    It’s the same with MT.
You don’t nead to kill them. You only nead to get your units in the other guys
“base” and kill his metal and power. And if your lucky some labs or the
    commander.
If you have 20 MT defending some expand and 30 defending your base, I only nead
to kill a few from those 30 to actualy get through, and those 20 won’t even
    shoot. So waste of metal.

I find it amusing while players who don’t know what they’re doing suggest using
sumos against MT’s etc.
hulks: These are kind of worthless yes, but if you aren’t in the mood of playing
serously, you can go “shopping”.
That is, the hulk looks a lot like a shopping cart, so you use one to steal
enemy pels and kbots, and then unload them one by one in front of an HLT for
metal =P
Only problem though is that you may have to do some hold fire since friendly
units shoot at the hulk if its carrying an enemy unit.
Eagles: I think these have their uses, can be handy on a large water map
Decoy Comms: I severely disagree with you on this one, I think decoy comms are
essential on any map that has enough water for a sea battle. It’s amazing how
much metal you can rack up with a decoy comm under water reclaiming, and they
are cheaper and can take more damage than underwater subs, fib a decoy comm and
let him reclami carefully in the frontline and you basically have free income
for some time.
Warlord: on larger, heavy resource water maps, I’ve f ound that the warlord
laser can do a lot of damage in a short amount of time.

TEA_Annihilater2k2, your not that bad, don’t wory about it.
xRelativityx007, the problem with the hulk is the lab and it’s metal cost.
But it’s good. Fill it with roaces, a jamer and you have a tactical nuke.
Add a few scouts to soack up damage, and self d it in the midle of the enemy
units :stuck_out_tongue:
Then tell me if you seen a better explosion :stuck_out_tongue:
(be sure to self d it close to more then 10 units to kill more metal thenyou mut
in it)

mavericks alot. I have played the game since i was 7 so DON’T ARGUE WITH ME! i
have played since 1997 and know quite alot about the game. Im ashamed ppl can

Annihilater2k2, i ment i playd worst people then you :stuck_out_tongue:
fallout, what kind of newbie are you?
Every time you build a Moho Mine (1.5k metal) you are left behind in units.
Asuming you live enough for it to pay it’s cost that is. Cause 15 less sams or
flashes can make a big difference in a tight game.
Just build 1fusion (4k metal) and a Moho Metal Maker.
You make 16 metal with that and 200 energy.
With Moho Mines, you make about 12 metal for 4k metal.
(not all paches are good, some give you 3 metal per moho mine)

Just because you have played the game for a long time, does not nessacerily
