Latest Info About TA2, TA’s Sequels & A Little History Of TA
Sources :
- This short Slashdot article :
- GPG site : http://www.gaspowered.com/press.php
- TAU’s forums
- This excellent Story Of Total Annihilation
- I’ve been to the Atari and Phantagram site, but didn’t find anything (save a TA forum)
Cavedog, the company who made Total Annihilation, died yearsago. Their first game, Total Annihilation put them on the map, andTotal Annihilation: Kingdoms took them right off. Several games were indevelopment, but the company soon folded, and the rest is history. Thesites www.cavedog.com and www.totalannihilation.com continued to run for a while, but are now closed. However the Cavedog FTP still remains.
The official TA2 was annouced as being developped by the KoreanPhantagram for Atari. That is not to be any more. So no official TA2 isto be made. If someone from Atari reads me, please tell us more.
Chris Taylor, the guy behind Total Annhilation, left Cavedog just afterthe Core Contingency add-on. He wasn’t involved in Battle Tactics norTotal Annihilation Kingdom, nor any official TA sequel.
His new company, Gas Powered Games, soon meet success with the release of the RPG game entitled “DungeonSiege,” and its expansion “Dungeon Siege: The Legends of Aranna”. Theyhave begun preparatory work on what has been coined the “spiritualsuccessor” of TA. This unofficial sequel is developped by Chris Taylorat Gas Powered Games, but without the TA license, so it won’t be calledTA2 but Supreme Commander, SUPCOM for short, and this one is scheduledfor 2006. Most of us believe this could be the spiritual successor toone of the most popular and longest-lasting games in the history of theRTS genre of computer gaming.
Don’t forgot all the community made mods, patches, add-ons,… Notonly there is already enough 3rd party materials to turn your TA intosomething feeling all fresh and new, but every now and then a TA fanpops up with the great idea of creating a fan-made TA sequel.
Chronology : I’m not 100% sure of all these dates.
- Chris Taylor wants to make a “Really Cool Wargame” (Anyone know when CT was born ?)
- 1995 : Chris Taylor starts making it for Humongous Entertainement
- 1997 : GT Interactive purchases Humongous from Ron Gilbert and Shelley Day.
- 1997 : As Humongous Entertainment was usually doing baby videogames,to avoid taunting when announcing a great RTS, they decide to create asmall company, called Frozen Yak. Eventually they find that Cavedogsounds better
- 1997 : Cavedog releases TA
- 1998 : Cavedog releases TA:CC
- 1998 : Cavedog makes Boneyard
- 1998 : Chris Taylor leaves Cavedog
- ??? : Cavedog makes TA:BT, TA:K, TA:K:IP
- ??? : GT Interactive has financial difficulties, which impact on Humongous and so on Cavedog
- 2000 : Infogrames absorbs GT Interactive, and so gets the TA license
- 2002 : Infogrames announces that they asked a small Korean company called Phantagram to develop a TA2
- 2003 : Infogrames takes the name of Atari, so as to hide its French armadillo origin and take advantage of Atari fame.
- ??? : For reasons undisclosed, Phantagram is no longer involved with a TA2 project
- 2004 : Grok, from Atari Public Relations, mod of Atari TA forums, posts cryptic messages about a new TA.
- 2004 : We believe there isn’t any official TA2 project any more.
Meanwhile :
- 1998 : Chris Taylor has founded a company called Gas Powered Games (GPG)
- 2002 : GPG issues its first game, Dungeon Siege
- ??? : Dungeon Siege is successful
- 2003 : Jeremy Snook (GPG Online Producer) tells us that “RTS 2.0” is in pre-production :
- 2003 : We know the name will be Supreme Commander (SUPCOM for short)
- 2004 : Chris Taylor begins to annouced that they are working on a new RTS
- 2004 : Which is due to be published by Electronic Arts in 2006
- June 2005 : PC Gamer publishes an article with the first screenshots and details about SUPCOM
- Now : Many TAers look forward to what could be an unofficial sequel to TA.

If you want to post about TA2, please don’t do it in TAU GeneralDiscussion, as it has the same effect on Nexus than pouring water on amogwaï. Instead, here are some places to unload your mind of all those"What a TA sequel would need" ideas of yours :
TAU - Godevac
TAU - The Future
Spring
alt.games.total-annihil - Looking for volunt…
PA - TA2
TA Fan Site - The Future / TA2
…well, I’m sure there are more.

Machinations
很幸运这个网站还没关,图也没挂,当然,游戏已经没有更新了,
还有一些小图已经打不开了,可惜
